Destination Vacation: Land, Air or Sea
When planning a vacation, the decision to travel by land, air or sea is one that warrants adequate consideration. Cost, distance, time and the overall comfort level of those accompanying you on the journey are all factors in finding the best fit for any given trip. Examination of the questions below may aid your decision making process.
• How far away is your destination? This is often the key factor in deciding between a road trip and a flight. If the bulk of your vacation focuses on the destination rather than the journey, it may make sense to fly, yielding more time to enjoy the final stop. If there are many places to visit along the way, driving might be an option even for a long distance trip.
• How much time do you have? Driving 1,000 miles each way with only a weekend for the entire trip is not likely to be a fulfilling vacation. A weekend cruise may, however, be a pleasant option. In general, the more time available, the more options apply. Look at the time it will take to travel compared to the time you will have remaining upon arrival to determine the best option.
• What will be the total cost? While most cruises factor in meals and entertainment, they do not typically toss in transportation to or from the port from which the cruise will embark. Air travel is the quickest way to get to your destination but will leave you without a car, precipitating a rental, bus fare or taxi service for the rest of the vacation. Car travel may involve renting a large enough vehicle to travel comfortably and will certainly rack up fuel expenditures. Whichever means of travel you choose, be sure to look at the total cost of the trip when comparing your options.
• Is there a package deal available? Sometimes bundled travel packages, complete with all necessary means of travel, admission to entertainment options and even discounted meals, are available from hotels, airlines, clubs and travel agencies. Look for a package that matches your intended plans and see if it will save money or improve the quality of your vacation.
• What is your comfort level? Are you afraid of flying? Do you suffer from motion sickness or become sea sick easily? Fears, misgivings and overall comfort levels with a given travel option may make the decision clear.
