A Disgruntled Display

I am a current participant in the Citizens Police Academy and have been quite impressed with our police officers. After only four weeks I’ve learned a lot about the work they do and how seriously and enthusiastically they do it. I am also a mother of a student at Robert F. Woodall elementary and sit in traffic each afternoon to pick up my child. This afternoon police officers were at the school to inform parents of the change in the flow of traffic. Now, rather than waiting, parked on Eden Way, all cars must use the parking lot to wait for school dismissal. The officers were explaining that this change is in the best interest of safety for the students, the parents, and thru traffic. Most parents understood and cooperated without incident. However, I witnessed an angry grandparent “yell” at two different officers at two different times. She was upset because her advanced spot in line was changed to one further back while waiting cars were rearranged. This upset me greatly. The police officers on the scene were doing their jobs (looking out for the safety of citizens) and this woman had nothing better to do than vent her frustration because she wasn’t in a “number one spot” anymore. I hope younger children who may have been a witness to that situation don’t imitate that selfishness and disrespect. I applaud the White House Police Department for being proactive, patient, and willing to serve its community. I sincerely hope this city is populated with more supportive citizens than what I saw today.

Thanks and Appreciation

WOW - where do my family & I even begin to say thank you & to express our appreciation. The “Blue Out” was an idea Belinda Wilks had not only to promote cancer awareness but also to support several of us Basketball parents who have been battling cancer. Think Ink, the community & our basketball teams quickly came on board to help her. It was awesome to be in the gym seeing all the blue T-shirts proudly displayed by the team members, students, regular fans, and others in our community who don’t usually come to the games. There are 4 players’ parents who have cancer. However, in our school there are many more students trying to cope with cancer affecting their parents. This disease is ugly and takes so much from you. I have had a long relationship with this disease. I was 26 & not married when my first breast cancer was discovered. I survived 20 years before my next breast cancer was found - by then I had married & had 2 wonderful children. Unfortunately in June ‘08, I had bone metastasis from the breast cancer. We are fighting a daily battle with the help of our Lord & Savior, friends, family & a community which is outstanding. The Denning family wants you to know how thankful & appreciative we are to all of you!

drawing more business

I read last week about the city changing to a four day work week due to budget shortfall and current economic realities. However, I would like to question another area.  What is the city doing to draw more businesses to the community?  I am aware of several empty buildings for both industrial and commercial.  What are we doing to fill these?

Now is a great time for the community to assess it’s rules, and ordinances to see if any have the impact to discouraging new business from locating to the area or discourage existing businesses from expanding and growing.

I have recently moved here from Kentucky where business development is encouraged and aggressively sought. I have not noticed the same intensity in White House.

I suggest that this economy is as good a time as any to improve our business climate and create new jobs.  If I could be so bold to suggest;

 • Identify a group of White House Ambassadors to represent the city  to potential industries and businesses

 • Select a group of individuals to identify existing ordinances that are holding back existing business.

 • Develop a marketing plan to sell White House.

Heartfelt Thanks

Our family cannot begin to express how much we appreciate all the prayers, cards, food, phone calls, love, and support during Roger’s illness and passing. “Our community” has shown so much love for us during this difficult time. Roger will be missed more than words can explain, not only by our family but also by many friends. His love, laughter and heart felt concern for others was a testament to the man he was and the way he viewed his world. He loved like no other, he laughed like no other and he shared his heart with all that he came in contact with. We will miss hearing him say “I love you” at the end of every encounter. He was our hero and he was our world.

We would like to thank each of you from the bottom of our hearts. We pray that we can some day be there for another family in need, the way you have been there for us.

The Neal Family
Leeanne, Anne-Marie, Chase & Chad
