WH Seniors show true meaning of BDP

It was one of those stories you hear about and the first thing you want to do is hug your child a little tighter or get in an extra “I Love You” that day.
That story being the tragic one of Clay Edwards, a coach for DeKalb County who died of a heart attack last weekend while playing a flag football game at his church. Edwards was 45-years old.
In DeKalb County he was simply known as “Coach Ed.”
Not only was Edwards a coach for the Tigers, he was a proud dad watching his son, Abram Edwards play his way to being the number one wide receiver on a team that has had a lethal air attack this season. The younger Edwards led his team with almost 1,000 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns this year.
What will be just a side note in this story as it is told through numerous media outlets is a decision that the White House seniors made about this game.
DeKalb County requested that they be able to wear their black jerseys for Friday night’s game at White House. In most circumstances, the home team will wear their dark jerseys and the visiting team will wear their white jerseys.
Coach Porter at White House left the decision up to his seniors and they voted to grant DeKalb County’s request and allow them to wear their black jerseys. That would put the Tigers in all black with their gold trim.
If you’re like me, once you read that the seniors were going to vote on it, you already knew what the outcome would be.
If you were surprised by it, you either haven’t been in White House too long or you don’t care anything about BDP.
I have only been covering the Blue Devils for a little over two years now and there was no question that the White House seniors would make us proud.
These are the same group of kids who surprised an underprivileged child with a barrage of Christmas presents last year. The seniors were the ones responsible for making that happen. They are also the ones that go to our Elementary School along with a cheerleader and talk to our kids about growing up and making the right choices. If my eight year old had to choose between hanging out with Peyton Manning or his senior football player that comes to his class (that would be #55 Michael Barrett), he wouldn’t have to think long, Barrett would win out every time.
It’s not just the seniors, but the entire football team, cheerleaders, Band of Pride, coaching staff and school administration along with a huge helping hand from you, the community that keep those three little letters alive...BDP.
I couldn’t have been prouder to wear White House blue than I was last Friday...
Just a little side note everyone PLEASE come out this Friday and be the important 12th man. It’s going to be a huge game and we need the stands overflowing as we take down the Bisons for the second time this year.
